WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT EXTRACTIONS

An extraction means to have a tooth removed, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding.

If you need an extraction, we will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction, we will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow. In most cases a small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth will slowly fill in the bone where the tooth root was through the formation of a blood clot

How do I care for my extraction site?

Avoid rinsing or swishing in your mouth for 24 hours- after that you may rinse GENTLY with warm salt water. DO NOT spit or suck on the extraction site. If you experience swelling, apply a cold cloth or an ice bag and call us right away. You can brush and floss the other teeth as usual, but don't clean the teeth next to where the tooth was removed for 48 hours. If you are having bleeding, apply pressure to the extraction site by gently biting on gauze.

Here are some tips to follow to make recovery easier:

  • Avoid rinsing or swishing particularly in the first 24 hours.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
  • Soft diet for 24 hours
